Scope and Content Note

This collection contains some of the personal and professional papers of W.W. Freeman, including correspondence, research materials, thesis material, photographs, and ephemera. The collection is housed in 4 boxes.

Biographical Note

W.W. Freeman began preaching in 1910 in Magnum, Okla. He received an A.B. from University of Louisville and an Th.M. and Th.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky. He also received an M.A. from Yale University. In 1922, he wrote a series of four article in Firm Foundation attempting to reconcile science and the Bible on the premise that the Bible is not inerrant on every dictum. The articles, titled "The Use and Abuse of the Bible," were met with severe critique from several circles. In 1923, he taught Bible and Greek at Abilene Christian College. After leaving ACC, he began teaching at East Texas State Teachers College, Commerce, Tex. While there, he also preached and served as an elder at Commerce Church of Christ.
