Scope and Content Note

A collection of notes and printouts about Isaiah, Job and Revelation, tracts, sermon notes, books, tests, The Vindicator, and newspaper articles from the estate of Homer Hailey. This collection also includes some personal correspondence and materials retrieved from books previously housed in the collection. This collection previously housed various books and pamphlets, including 72 copies of "Vanguard: a Journal for Growing Christians" dating from 1975-1979; these materials were removed from the collection and catalogued. Also included were several books was an inscribed book of "The Preceptor: Vols. 1-2 Nov. 1951-Oct. 1953" that belonged to Hailey's mother and then was passed to his son Rob Hailey.

Biographical Note

Homer Hailey was born in 1903. He began preaching in Buffalo Gap, Texas in 1927. He served as minister for churches in Texas, California, Hawaii, Florida and Arizona and preached for meetings in hundreds of churches of Christ throughout the United States. He taught Bible at Abilene Christian College for 13 years between 1934 and 1951. Hailey served for 22 years as vice president and head of the Bible department at Florida Christian College in Temple Terrace, Fla., and then retired to Tucson in the spring of 1973. Hailey passed away at the age of 97 in 2000. Books Hailey authored include: Attitudes and Consequences in the Restoration Movement; Lets Go Fishing for Men; Commentary on the Minor Prophets; That You May Believe; and Hailey's Comments, Vols. 1 and 2. He also wrote commentaries on the books of Revelation and Isaiah. The Churches of Christ in the 20th Century Homer Hailey's Personal Journey of Faith, written by David Edwin Harrell Jr., was published this year by the University of Alabama Press in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
