Scope and Content Note
This collection contains information concerning George Stuart Benson’s mission at Kalomo, Zambia. The material consists of correspondence acknowledging donation deposits, explaining to contributors what the donations were used for and what else was needed. Additionally, details of meetings conducted, experiences and concerns of missionaries, salary discussion, and job openings were included. Financial documents are also contained and consist of statements of receipts and disbursements for the Zambia mission fund, notes of amounts of money received, copy of deposit tickets/slips, cost of Kalomo Reporter, monthly financial reports, and enclosed checks. As for legal documents, several agreements between the Namwianga Christian Secondary School and prospect teachers, management and circulation of the Kalomo Reporter by Geo. S. Benson are compiled. Lastly, a literary production by Martha Moomba discussing her experience in Zambia as a teacher is within the materials contained.
George Stuart Benson was born in Dewey County, Oklahoma, in September 26, 1898 and passed in Searcy, Arkansas, in December 15, 1991. George Stuart Benson obtained his training at Harper College, Harding College, Oklahoma A&M University, and at University of Chicago. Dr. Benson was a missionary to China from 1925 to 1936. He was the founder and principal of Canton Bible School, the president of Harding College, and Chancellor of Oklahoma Christian University. Additionally, he had a great interest in missionary work and decided to embark a journey in Kalomo, Zambia, where he became the chairman of the American Board of the Namwianga Christian Secondary School. His mission was to train secondary teachers in English-Religious Education.
Acquired by McGarvey Ice in portions from 2007-2011; The material for Benson's papers came from the estate/papers of James D. Bales (see MS #82).
The material in each box has kept the authors’ original arrangement and is in alphabetical order.
