Alexander Campbell was born in 1788 at Ballymena, County Antrim, about a mile from Shane's Castle which is seated on the north shore of Lough Neagh, a very large lake in the center of Northern Ireland. Jane Corneigle Campbell, Alexander's mother, had grown up in this area. This photograph looks south across the promenade and ramparts of Shane's Castle to the lake beyond. The building on the left is the remaining wall of the Camellia House, a garden room for parties.
