Abstract

Jesus’s blessing of the peacemakers has a long prehistory in Israel’s reflections on shalom. Yet neither the Bible that Jesus read nor his own practices looked like the church’s all too frequent conflict avoidance, acceptance of racialized or gendered power structures, or refusal to reexamine theological claims. These sessions trace the Bible’s ideas about peace and our capacity for building it. They then consider how the church can build capacity for peace within its own walls and in our communities. And they consider the ways in which peacemaking reflects God’s desire for a blessed state for all humankind.
