Scope and Content Note

The Elbert G. Lewis Papers contain 2 bankers boxes of sermon notes arranged by book of the Bible, topical research files, and sermons. The original order was largely maintained.

Biographical Note

Elbert G. Lewis was born 22 May 1935 in Huntsville, Alabama. He graduated from Butler High School in 2953 and from Gadsden State Junior College with an Associate’s Degree. He went on to Southern Christian University in Montgomery, Alabama, where he received a Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1963.

He served many churches throughout his career including Patton Heights Church of Christ in San Antonio, Texas, a congregation in Bogalusa, Louisiana, and throughout Alabama including Colvin Street Church of Christ in Anniston, Betta View Hills Church of Christ in Oxford, Central Church of Christ in Anniston, Central Church of Christ in Rainsville, and a congregation in Red Bay.

Arrangement

The original order of the materials was maintained as much as possible. The papers include folders of sermons arranged by book of the Bible and then topical research files and loose sermons. In Box 2 there are several folders marked ‘used.’ Apparently Lewis described these sermons as ‘used’ or ‘preached’ but there is no indication when or where they were preached. These were foldered as-is.
