Scope and Content Note

This collection includes biographical materials and information about the Goodpasture family, sermons, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera. The collection also includes materials Goodpasture collected such as correspondence from H. Leo Boles (with E. R. Harper, R. H. Boll, F. L. Rowe, Clinton Davidson, N. B. Hardeman, Claud F. Witty, and others) and J. W. Shepherd. The materials reflect his career as an evangelist and his work as editor and publisher of Gospel Advocate. Goodpasture's tenure as editor of this Nashville, TN-based periodical spanned 1939-1977; his papers provide insight into some of the most divisive issues among the Churches of Christ during the twentieth century. Additionally, there is information about and correspondence from and about Marshall Keeble reflecting Goodpasture's work as editor of Biography and Sermons of Marshall Keeble, Evangelist, first published in 1931. Several tracts and pamphlets which were removed and cataloged; these bear a gift note in the catalog record indicating they were from the Goodpasture collection.

Biographical Note

Benton Cordell Goodpasture was born on April 9, 1895, in Livingston, Tennessee. He attended Nashville Bible School, where he studied under H. Leo Boles. Goodpasture married Emily Cleveland Cliett in 1918, and then preached in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia until 1939. In 1939 Leon McQuiddy selected Goodpasture to become editor of the Gospel Advocate, serving in that capacity until his death. During his tenure as editor, Goodpasture dealt with a number of issues facing the Churches of Christ including the premillennial controversy, unity meetings, issues of pacifism and patriotism due to WWII, the institutional conflicts of the 1950s, and modernism in the 1960s. Goodpasture continue to preach in Nashville at Hillsboro Church of Christ from 1939-1951, then served as an elder there until his death. After his wife, Cleveland died in 1964 he married Freddie Joan Goetz in 1965. Goodpasture died on February 18, 1977, in Nashville, Tennessee. The papers were kept by his second wife and transferred to Center for Restoration Studies from Disciples of Christ Historical Society by Goodpasture's son, Cliett Goodpasture, in 2016.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged topically; correspondence is arranged in some cases alphabetically by the correspondents' last name, in other cases by date. This order was imposed upon the collection by David McWhirter, Archivist at Disciples of Christ Historical Society, in 1998. Some items were not then foldered or described. Upon receipt at Center for Restoration Studies some components were consolidated, in some cases the arrangement improved or clarified and some published items have been removed to be cataloged. Loose materials were foldered and basic conservation work was undertaken to stabilize some photographs. Oversize materials were relocated to the flat file.
