Scope and Content Note
This collection includes correspondence received by Murphree while she was a missionary in Salzburg, Austria (1959-1962). The correspondence also includes letters Murphree sent to her cousin, Rebecca Henry. Henry saved these letters and later returned them to Murphree. Additionally, the collection includes newsletters from Murphree and other missionaries in Europe, photographs of Murphree, and Murphree’s obituaries.
Sarah Martha Murphree was born in Gadsden, AL, on August 20, 1909. She received a B.A. in Music from Alabama College (Montevallo, AL) in 1930, and taught music in public schools in Gadsden, AL (1930-1940), and Houston, TX (1940-1959). Murphree then moved to Salzburg, Austria, to do mission work in conjunction with Robert and Donna Skelton (1959-1962). After her return from Austria, Murphree worked with the Girl Scouts, taught piano lessons, and volunteered with the Southwest Central Church of Christ (Houston, TX) hospital ministry. Murphree died on April 9, 2003, in Houston, TX.
