Scope and Content Note
This collection contains transcripts of sermons preached at Hillsboro Church of Christ in Hillsboro, Tennessee. Most were delivered by Batsell Barrett Baxter. Dan Harless and Tom C. Brown also contributed a significant number of sermons during the span of the collection. The collection is housed in 4 boxes.
Biographical Note
The Hillsboro Church of Christ was established in 1927 in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1973, they moved into a new building, where they currently meet. Batsell Barrett Baxter received a Bachelor of Arts from Abilene Christian College and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from University of Southern California. He began preaching at Hillsboro Church of Christ in 1951 and continued to preach there until his retirement in 1980. Baxter also served as the regular speaker for Herald of Truth during this time. Dan Harless contributed to publications like Herald of Truth and Gospel Advocate. He also served as a full-time preacher. He worked closely with Baxter during their tenure together at Herald of Truth. Brown and Harless followed Baxter at the Hillsboro Church. These transcripts were widely disseminated by mail, especially during Baxter’s tenure. The collection includes later sermons (1998-2004) on cassette tape by Hillsboro ministers Marlin Connelly and James Waugh.
