John Allen Gano Papers -- MS #338 Box #1 John Allen Gano Correspondence, 1851-1901 Consists largely of family correspondence to Richard M. Gano from his family and from his father, John Allen Gano. The letters tell of war experiences, notes and interest due, family and friends ill or dying, business trips and opportunities, school experiences, and church business and activities. Items of particular interest include a letter from Jesse L. Sewell asking Richard to hold a gospel meeting in Lebanon, TN, and a letter from Louis Loos of Bethany College. Photocopies of the items in Box 1. If study is to be done, these copies should be used instead of the originals. Gano Family Tree Gano Family Letters - Contents Gano Family Tree Gano Family Letters Autobiography of John Allen Gano, Sr. This includes 420 handwritten pages of what must have been a longer work -- ours ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence. It begins with his birth and carries on up through 1860, highlighting his family and religious life. On page two he states that should anyone read this work, he prays "that it may prove a blessing to them by leading them to the Rock of Salvation." Photocopies of pages 1-149. Diary of John Allen Gano, Sr. July 26, 1878 - August 25, 1887 Journal of Richard M. Gano A record of baptisms and restorations which accompanied his preaching from 1866-1908; the funerals he conducted from 1867-1908; the weddings he performed from 1867-1908; and a record of the churches he preached to from 1867- 1883. 35 page typed summary of the above journal. Military Records and Correspondence of Brigadier-General Richard M. Gano. - vol. 1 Volumes I & II are bound volumes of photocopies of transcriptions (about 900 pages) typed by John Gano (generation?) in the mid-1970s. The materials within these volumes are from a wide variety of sources including books, periodicals, Official Records of the War of the Rebellion; U.S. War Department, and "Personal War Record of...Gano, unpublished." To aid in future research, a bibliography is being compiled as well as a listing of dates/events that correspond to the "Personal Records." This bibliography will be posted online here as soon as it is compiled. - This volume covers the period in the Tennessee Army from June 1, 1861 - July 2, 1863. Box 3 Military Records and Correspondence of Brigadier-General Richard M. Gano. - vol. 2 This volume covers the period in the Trans-Mississippi Army from July 3, 1863 - May 2, 1865. PICTURES These 37 photographs are of the Gano family, their homes, and their burial plots. The home photos are those of John Allen Gano, Sr. near Centerville, KY, and Richard M. Gano in Dallas, TX. The individual photos are of John Allen Gano and his family and of his son, Richard M. Gano, and his family.
