Scope and Content Note

The collection is split into two series. The first series contains sermons, lessons, correspondence, notes and study guides from Howard Horton. The second series contains a collection of cassette tapes.

Biographical Note

Born in 1917, Howard Patrick Horton attended Howard received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pepperdine University in 1939, his Associates of Arts from David Lipscomb University in 1937, and Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University in 1959. He was married to Mildred E. Gladney in 1938, two years after he began preaching in 1936 in Fairveiw, Kentucky. He wrote a book, Breaking Down Barriers Among Catholics, in 1947. Horton was involved in radio broadcasts at WJLD, Bessemer, Alabama, WDOD-AM-FM, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and WCBM-WBAL, Baltimore, Maryland, and . He taught at various times at Central Christian College, Pepperdine University (where he was head of the Bible department from 1961-1964), Oklahoma Christian University, Harding University, and David Lipscomb University. Horton also wrote papers and articles for 20th Century Christian as a staff writer. He also did mission work, teaching at Ibaraki Christian College in Japan and at various other schools of Biblical studies, and he did mission work in Nigeria, Japan and Vietnam. Horton received the Diakonia Award at Lipscomb for 50 years of preaching. He later retired from Lipscomb in 1987 and moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to work with the Honolulu Church of Christ. He remarried Fleta J. "Jerry" Vantine (nee, Campbell) in 1993, two years after his wife, Mildred died. He died in Oklahoma City in 2000.

The collection is arranged in two series. Series one contains Howard Horton's Papers and series two houses Howard Horton's cassette collection. Files and papers are arranged in alphabetical order as are the cassette tapes.
