Scope and Content Note

This collection contains essays written by James Davis on various questions and issues of particular concern to the Church of Christ. The collection is housed in one box.

Biographical Note

The following biographical note is excerpted from James S. Davis’ obituary from the Palestine Herald-Press:

“James S. Davis, 89, of Palestine, TX, entered the gates of heaven on Monday, May 11, 2020 after a long life of service to our Lord Jesus Christ. Jim was born on the 15th day of June 1930 in Oak Hill, WV to Roy E. Davis and Thelma Anne Davis. He began working with his father in his insurance company in Charleston, WV where he met his wife of 62 years, Jane Davis. Throughout his life, he was an independent sales representative and business owner in Arizona, California and Texas. Jim was deeply committed to his church family at the Crockett Road Church of Christ and participated in a variety of organizations including the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Thelma Davis; siblings, Karl Davis, Russell Davis, Kenny Davis, Erma Miller, and son, James S. Davis II.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Davis of Palestine, TX; children, Jackie Jennings and husband Steve of Ashville, NC, Karl Davis and wife Elnice of Bastrop, LA, Roy Davis and wife D'Anne of Elkhart, TX, and Jayne Ash and husband Carlton of Owasso, OK; 12 grandchildren, Bethany Jennings, Becky Conneen, Brittany Wilson, Julie Dash, Jonathan Davis, Lisa Davis, Kelley Gentry, Elizabeth Davis George, Justin Davis, Kyli Davis, Jeremy Ash and Lauren Ash; 7 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim dedicated his life to the Lord in early adulthood and was a life-long learner of the Bible. He studied the Greek bible and wrote many papers with his most notable being "The Action of Anger'' which was published in "One Body" magazine. He created a website, focusonthescriptures.com, to help bring others closer to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was his greatest joy to see his family and friends accept Christ's words: "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will all know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32 NIV)

If you ever had a chance to ask Jim how he was doing, his reply was always "Happy on my way to heaven". Well today Jim is happy in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
