Scope and Content Note

These papers document the lives of Leonard Ray and Patricia Ann Bradley Hockaday Pamplin. The couple’s missionary service in Hong Kong in the 1960s and church involvement in Church of Christ congregations throughout California and Texas are particularly well represented in these papers.

Biographical Note

Leonard Ray Pamplin (December 24, 1930-February 13, 2021) was born in California to Howard I. and Bernice Pamplin. After graduating from Huntington Beach High School he went on to attend Westlake College of Music in Hollywood. In 1950 he earned his barber’s license, a profession he continued until 2916. In 1950 he served in Korea on th eUSS Manchester in the US Naval Reserve as a barber. After he returned to America he studied at Pepperdine University, obtaining multiple degrees. He preached at Central Church of Christ (San Luis Obispo, CA) from 1960-1966. During this time he married Patricia Hockaday in 1963.

Patricia Ann Bradley (March 21, 1931-January 13, 2021) was born to Carl L. and Mary Ollie Bradley. She attended Abilene Christian College (B.S. and M.Ed. in education). She remained in Abilene and married ACC professor Dr. Don Hockaday III in 1952 and had two sons, Bill and David. Dr. Hockaday died in 1957 and Patricia and the boys eventually moved to California. Leonard and Patricia were married in 1963 and had three more children: Brad, Shan, and Kim. The couple moved to Hong Kong in 1966 where they served as missionaries until 1971. Upon returning to the US he returned to work as a barber. The family worshiped at the Northside Church of Christ (Santa Ana, CA) and were active in the community as foster parents and supporting refugee families and orphans.

The family moved to Abilene in 1979. Leonard continued to work as a barber and was active in the Abilene Community Band. Music was a large part of his life from early childhood and he continued to play clarinet and oboe in many venues throughout his years. The couple were members at Hillcrest Church of Christ (Abilene, TX).
