Scope and Content Note
This collection includes biographical materials and information about Goodpasture’s family, his sermons, and Goodpasture’s correspondence. The collection also includes correspondence from H. Leo Boles (with E. R. Harper, R. H. Boll, F. L. Rowe, Clinton Davidson, N. B. Hardeman, Claud F. Witty, and more) and J. W. Shepherd, which was later acquired by Goodpasture. The materials provide look into Goodpasture’s career and work as editor of the Gospel Advocate, which includes insight into some of the most divisive issues among the Churches of Christ during the twentieth century. Additionally, there is information about and correspondence with Marshall Keeble due to Goodpasture’s editing of Biography and sermons of Marshall Keeble, Evangelist.
Biographical Note
Benton Cordell Goodpasture was born on April 9, 1895, in Livingston, Tennessee. He attended Nashville Bible School, where he studied under H. Leo Boles. Goodpasture married Emily Cleveland Cliett in 1918, and then preached in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia until 1939. In 1939 Leon McQuiddy selected Goodpasture to become the editor of the Gospel Advocate. During his time as editor, Goodpasture dealt with a number of issues facing the Churches of Christ including, the premillennial controversy, unity meetings, issues due to WWII, and the institutional conflicts. Goodpasture continue to preach in Nashville at Hillsboro Church of Christ from 1939-1951, and then served as an elder until his death. After his wife, Emily, died in 1964, he married Freddie Joan Goetz in 1965. He died on February 18, 1977, in Nashville, Tennessee.
