Description

Rocky outcrop by Loch Indall near Gartbreck Point, view to southwest out to sea

Comments

Use photographs of locations on the Campbell family’s route from Ireland to Glasgow to develop geographical awareness in students of the Campbell family’s history and empathy for the difficulty of their journey.

Comments

Alexander Campbell, his mother, and his siblings were shipwrecked October 7, 1808, near this site on the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland. This photograph looks to the southwest out to sea from the rocky shore of Loch Indaal at low tide. On one of the rocky outcrops in this area, Jane Corneigle Campbell and her six younger children waited in the storm after being rescued on October 8. Alexander found them when he came ashore with the last boatload of survivors about 2pm. Everyone on the ship survived.
