Abstract

Abstract provided by interviewer Gaby Sides.

Bryann Zielinski Attended Abilene Christian University from fall of 1994 to spring of 1997. ACU is a Private Christian liberal arts college located in Abilene, TX. It is known for its prestigious education and the ability to learn while walking with God. Bryann recounts her experience at ACU in the nineties and the general environment that formed her college years. She discuses the expectations put on the women at the time and the double standard between women and men attending ACU. Along with that she recalls not being challenged and everyone attending ACU being relatively similar in looks and beliefs, not seeing many- if at all- outliers.

This interview provides primary source information on Abilene Christian University’s student life, social expectations, university residence life rules, and the general outlook on different perspectives of sexuality and gender norms during the mid-90’s.

Comments

The ACC/ACU Gender and Sexuality Project preserves firsthand accounts of alumni of Abilene Christian College (later Abilene Christian University), with particular attention to how students, faculty, and staff have experienced issues of gender and sexuality during their time at the institution. The collection began in Fall 2019 as a class project in HIST 340, Historical Perspectives on Gender and Sexualities.
