Vertical files contain ephemera, clippings, photographs or other items not easily catalogued. Vertical files do not usually contain published items like books, tracts, pamphlets or periodical issues. Unlike manuscripts or archival collections, vertical files do not originate from a single source. Rather, they have been assembled from many sources over a long period of time. In short, vertical files allow us to collect many single items of a like nature into one larger whole.
Our five sets of vertical files are Church Leaders, Congregations, World Churches, Organizations, and Subjects.
The Church Leaders file (or biographical file) contains information about ministers, missionaries, evangelists, editors, writers or other individuals who contributed to the public life of the Stone-Campbell movement. Files are arranged alphabetically by the person's last name.
The Congregational file contains information about congregations of the Stone-Campbell movement within the United States. Files are arranged alphabetically by state, city or county, and congregation.
The World Churches file contains information about congregations of the Stone-Campbell movement outside the United States. Files are arranged according to the Dewey classification scheme.
The Organizational file contains information about parachurch ministries, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and benevolent, social service or missionary agencies within the Stone-Campbell movement. Files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the organization.
The Subject file contains information about common subjects of particular interest to historians and students of the movement. It serves as a clearinghouse for research leads and bibliographic information about the movement, its subjects and thematic emphases, and its literature. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
