Scope and Content Note

This file set preserves information from and about 1258 congregations or cities or counties in which a congregation is (or was) located in the United States. Nearly all are Churches of Christ, but some are Christian Churches; in a few cases other congregations are included where their history intersects the Restoration Movement. The file set includes clippings, bulletins, church directories, articles by or about the subjects, photographs, flyers or other ephemera and other information. ACU Library staff began this set of files in the 1980s. It complements four similar sets of vertical files, all housed as part of the collections of Center for Restoration Studies: Biographical Files, World Churches Files, Organizational Files, and Subject Files. This file set contains information about congregations located in the United States. For information about congregations in other countries, please see the World Churches Vertical File. In 2016-2017 arrangement and order was improved by removing and cataloging many published tracts and pamphlets. Some non-Stone-Campbell-related files were weeded, many files were refoldered, and the entire set was relabeled and an inventory created.

Donor Note

ACU Library staff collected these files from many sources, especially through donor gifts and submissions.

Arrangement

The Congregational Vertical File is arranged in alphabetical order by state, then by city (or county is some cases) within the state, and then by congregation within the city. Where multiple congregations are located in the same city, they are listed in alphabetical order by the name of the congregation. Since nearly all of the congregations listed herein are Churches of Christ, that part of the congregation’s name has been omitted. However, if the congregation is a Christian Church, this has been noted without exception insofar as the information in the folder supports that distinction. Each entry in this finding aid corresponds to a discrete folder (or folders where indicated) within the vertical file. The folders are labelled with the subject’s name and the generic call number (REST—VF—Cong)
