Abstract

Hypertension is a complex chronic disease process, and it is essential to educate the patient on the disease process, as well as on all aspects of self-management. It is essential that providers choose an evidence-based guideline by which they will manage their hypertensive patients. In addition, providers must schedule regular follow-up appointments with their patients, along with a wide variety of other multifactorial components in regard to the management of patients diagnosed with hypertension. In addition, providers have a responsibility to stay informed on new approaches to blood pressure management by reviewing the professional literature on a regular basis. Much more research is needed on an ongoing basis regarding which guidelines offer the best approach to managing patients with hypertension, as there are many guidelines for providers to choose from in regard to managing hypertensive patients, and much more research is needed on all aspects of hypertension management. It is also important for providers to attempt to become involved in policymaking and research regarding the management of hypertension. Providers also need to monitor their personal patient populations of hypertensive patients within their practices in order to identify trends that they can follow and recommend research to be performed on these trends and topics of interest. This study looked at whether or not patient outcomes in regard to hypertension were better with the provider’s adherence to the American Heart Association Joint National Committee JNC7 or JNC8 guidelines. Through a thorough literature review, data were collected in regard to this. This project was a meta-analysis, and the data were analyzed through various statistical means by a statistician, including effect sizes, hazard ratios, and odds ratios. The purpose of this DNP project was to conclude that one of these two guidelines is more beneficial than the other in regard to the management of hypertension, and the outcome was that the JNC7 hypertension guidelines proved to be most effective. In v conclusion, it is paramount to ensure that patients achieve and maintain blood pressure control so they live longer, healthier lives and have decreased costs associated with this illness. By ensuring this, there will also be potential financial gains for the healthcare institutions globally that are caring for hypertensive patients. By following the hypertension guidelines set forth by the American Heart Association Joint National Committee JNC7, healthcare providers can provide the most up-to-date, safe, and effective care for their patients diagnosed with hypertension.
