Abstract

This thesis reports on a Doctor of Ministry project that was designed to encourage the Singing Oaks Church of Christ in Denton, Texas, to develop a more intentional reliance on God through the use of a spiritual fonnation manual focused on biblical advent themes and particular spiritual disciplines. The project was done during the season of Advent to reinforce the congregational worship and preaching. The three main spiritual disciplines utilized were contemplative prayer, fasting, and silence. The project included the production and distribution to the congregation of a spiritual formation manual made up of four parts. Each part included Scripture lessons with reflection questions, hymns, prayers, pictures, and material written by various authors. It was distributed to the congregation on four consecutive Sundays beginning the Sunday preceding the first Sunday in Advent.
