She was born on August 24, 1921 in Sherman, Texas. She attended schools in Shannon, Independence, Whitesboro and Sherman, graduating from Whitesboro. She was baptized in 1932 at Walnut Street Church of Christ by JP Sanders of Sherman, Texas. She held the position of secretary to the Water Superintendent and City Manager.
Ethelyn was a writer, having her first book published in 1956 entitled "Come Unto Me". She also wrote articles appearing in Christian magazines, was a Bible scholar and church historian.
She married Vernon Eugene Mitchell on September 10, 1942 in her home in Sherman with Byron Fullerton, Minister of the Walnut Street Church of Christ officiating. They had one daughter Marcia Ruth.
