Scope and Content Note
These papers include Mitchell’s notes, clippings, VHS, CDs, and assorted memorabilia and awards. They document his life and work as well as the activities of some of the congregations he served. This collection brings together two accessions into a single set of papers.
Biographical Note
The following biographical note is excerpted from Mitchell’s obituary from robinsonfuneralhome.com:
“Dr. Mitchell was born on August 15, 1940 in La Feria, TX to Lynn Mitchell Sr. and Hazel Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell held the following degrees: B.A. in Bible with minors in Greek and English, Abilene Christian College, 1961; M. A. in Doctrine with minor in Hebrew, Abilene Christian College., 1969. Thesis: The Apologetic Method of C.S. Lewis; Ph.D. in Religious Studies, Rice University, 1979.
He was also part of the Academic Society Membership, American Academy of Religion, Society of Biblical Literature, American Society of Christian Ethics, and Restoration Theological Research Fellowship. Dr. Mitchell was a Resident Scholar in Religion in A.D. Bruce Religion Center and Director of the Religious Studies Program for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, University of Houston, 1985 – 2014. His selected publications included, Walking in the Light: How Christians Face Ethical Issues, Two Ages and Two Communities: The Implications of an Eschatological Duality for Development of a Social Ethic (Dissertation at Rice University Microfilms International), and The Two Books of God: Science and the Bible.”
