Greenock Esplanade looking North across the Firth of Clyde toward Helensburgh, a resort town. The Scottish Highlands rise north of Helensburgh. On Tuesday, November 1, Alexander and others went ashore to walk five miles to Greenock, where Alexander engaged lodgings. He returned in a boat to get his family and all their baggage to Greenock that night. Greenock was then and still is a busy port on the Firth of Clyde west of Glasgow. Alexander arranged for the family to follow him by boat with their baggage and set out November 3 to walk 23 miles to Glasgow to find a place for them to live.
