Abstract
Rev. Dr. Katie Hays details her history in and departure from Churches of Christ. Her experience growing up in Churches of Christ in the 1970s to 1980s in Panhandle Texas was positive. She embraced Churches of Christ exceptionalism. Moving to Massachusetts to attend MIT in 1986 provided a very different cultural and congregational experience. After education at Abilene, Institute for Christian Studies in Austin, Texas, and Yale Divinity School, Hays and her husband, Lance Pape, co-pastored at two Churches of Christ in the 1990s and early 2000s. A hurtful incident in 2003 and subsequent persecution, Hays and Pape decided to leave Churches of Christ. Hays discusses the transition to the Disciples of Christ in 2005, and how her recent work for LGBTQ inclusion is influenced by her own experience of exclusion in Churches of Christ.
