Comments

Use photographs of locations on the Campbell family’s route from Ireland to Glasgow to develop geographical awareness in students of the Campbell family’s history and empathy for the difficulty of their journey.

Comments

Alexander Campbell, his mother, and his siblings were shipwrecked on the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland. The island of Jura lies just north if Islay. After recovering from the wreck, the family sailed from the northeastern coast of Islay from Port Askaig, opposite Jura, to the mainland of Scotland. While waiting for passage, Alexander spent a day hiking in the mountains of Jura, October 26th, 1808 (Richardson, 1868, v. 1, p. 115-125). This photograph is taken from a ferry traveling from Kennecraig on the peninsula of Kintyre to Port Ellen on the southeast coast of Islay.
